Sun lit or sparkling for the evening, the plaza that’s embraced by The Shops at Sea Pines Center has been a magnet for people in the know about Hilton Head Island for generations. Its power to pull the attention away from daily cares – or to offer a master-stroke answer for the arrangements that are called for by a family vacation – has been remarkable and consistent for more than 40 years.
What people see and hear, and what they think and feel, when they come to The Shops at Sea Pines Center tends to bring them back with its own kind of affection. That feeling seems to change and grow as time goes on. And as Thanksgiving and the holidays approach, the warmth that people find here takes on a special glow.
Imagining Another Way
Thanksgiving became a thing on America’s favorite vacation island. It is getting to be an accepted fact, and yet we still remark on it because we remember before the idea caught on. Within the memories of most of us, the old song, “Over the river and through the woods to Grandmother’s house we go,” summed up a reasonable expectation.
Thanksgiving was notoriously the heaviest travel week of the year, because people expected to flock to family homes for the big day – and the day of the week never varied. As a result highways and airports became places one would prefer to avoid, and yet few could conceive of another way to celebrate.
Approaching a Season of Celebration
The glittering evenings that now arrive so early, the leisurely tee times on our three illustrious golf courses, the easy court times at the Tennis Center, and the big-city theater and arts scene with which the island is blessed – all these attractions and our gentle subtropical weather began to persuade people that Thanksgiving was not a time to join in a stampede.
Little by little at first, and then in noticeable waves, Hilton Head Island visitors made this their new version of Thanksgiving. Turns out it’s a fine place to gather the family and loved ones. And for a season of celebration, Thanksgiving here is only the beginning.
Carrying an Ongoing Story
The magnetism of The Shops at Sea Pines Center is not based on any one kind of occasion. Celebrations such as our seasonal Farmers Market or the recent charity fundraiser, Fun with the Fox, are just the punctuation marks in a story that goes on all the time, and brings with it literally millions of happy endings.
The ways of enjoying The Shops at Sea Pines Center are as personal and individual as the men, women, and children – or the friends and families – who come here. Each person finds his or her own version. And providing that colorful palette of choices was as much a part of the Sea Pines founders’ design as placing us right here in the middle of the Miracle Mile.
